Who Can Donate Blood in India?

The basic rules for blood donation, how often you can donate, and how to prepare.

The basic requirements

  • Age: 18 to 65 years (first-time donors are usually accepted up to 60).
  • Weight: at least 45 kg. Donors under 55 kg usually give a smaller unit (350 ml instead of 450 ml).
  • Haemoglobin: at least 12.5 g/dL. The blood bank checks this with a finger-prick test before you donate.
  • Health: feeling well on the day, with normal pulse, blood pressure and temperature.

How often can you donate?

Type of donationGap before the next donation
Whole blood (men)90 days (3 months)
Whole blood (women)120 days (4 months)
Platelets by apheresis (SDP)At least 48 hours, and only a limited number of times a year. The blood bank keeps track.

When you register with us, we automatically pause your alerts for 90 days (men) or 120 days (women) after you donate, so you are only asked when you are ready again.

When you should wait before donating

  • Cold, flu, fever or any infection: wait until you have fully recovered.
  • Antibiotics or other medicines: tell the blood bank doctor what you are taking.
  • Tattoo, ear or body piercing, or acupuncture: wait 12 months.
  • Recent surgery, dental work or a major illness: ask the blood bank how long to wait.
  • Pregnancy, and usually for a year after delivery and while breastfeeding.
  • Alcohol: avoid it for at least 24 hours before donating.
  • Platelet (SDP) donors: no aspirin or similar painkillers in the 3 days before donating.

Some long-term conditions, such as HIV or hepatitis B or C, mean a person cannot donate blood. If you have diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure or another ongoing condition, ask the blood bank doctor: many people with well-controlled conditions can still donate.

Tips before and after donating

  • Eat a proper meal 2 to 3 hours before, and drink plenty of water.
  • Carry a photo ID.
  • Rest for 10 to 15 minutes afterwards and have the snack or drink offered.
  • Avoid heavy exercise and lifting for the rest of the day.
  • Most blood banks give you a donation certificate. Keep it for your records.
